    According to Business Insider, Facebook revealed Thursday that it has stored millions of Instagram users' passwords in an unencrypted format, which means employees could easily read passwords for years. The news came Thursday when an existing Facebook blog post from March was updated. The post previously said that unencrypted passwords for hundreds of millions of Facebook and Facebook Lite users had been accessible on its internal servers. At the time, the company said the same issue impacted "tens of thousands" of Instagram users. On Thursday, that number was updated to "millions." Facebook explained by saying it has since found "additional logs of Instagram passwords being stored in a readable format," but that its "investigation has determined that these stored passwords were not internally abused or improperly accessed."

    Facebook revealed on Thursday it hadn't been properly masking the passwords of hundreds of millions of it users, and stored them in an internal database that could be accessed by its staff. According to CNN, the company said it discovered the exposed passwords during a security review in January and launched an investigation. Facebook did not say how long it had been storing passwords in this way. One vice president of Facebook wrote on Thursday that the passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook, and that the company has found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them.
