British lawmakers back motion to delay Brexit

Capping a whirlwind week for British politics, UK lawmakers on Thursday voted to ask the European Union to delay Brexit. Britain is due to leave the bloc on March 29. The requested delay aims to push that deadline back to at least June and head off a chaotic end to the 46-year partnership without an approved withdrawal agreement. Thursday’s government motion passed overwhelmingly, 413 to 202. MPs also rejected an amendment that would have backed using the delay to hold a second Brexit referendum to break the stalemate. Lawmakers have twice heavily rejected the deal Prime Minister Theresa May sealed with the other 27 EU member states over the divorce, most recently in a House of Commons vote on Tuesday.
