Carlos Ghosn Leaves Jail After $9 Million Bail

Hong Kong (CNN Business)Carlos Ghosn left a Tokyo jail on Wednesday after spending more than three months in detention on allegations of financial misconduct, Japanese media reported. Ghosn, the former head of Nissan (NSANF) and Renault (RNLSY), walked out of out of a detention center after posting bail of 1 billion yen ($9 million), according to public broadcaster NHK. He's required to stay in Japan and will be closely monitored. An appeal by prosecutors against the bail decision was rejected. One of the most prominent figures in the global auto industry, Ghosn is awaiting trial on charges he understated his income for years and abused his position by transferring personal investment losses to Nissan.

Ghosn paid the 1 billion yen which is around $9 million bail, among the highest ever in Japan.

His bail request came after two previously failed attempts to leave jail. Ghosn was kept in solitary confinement and denied access to the outside world. Prosecutors say Ghosn reported only half of his massive salary to the government.
