Canada Grounds Boeing 737 MAX 8 And 9 Jets, Joining Other Countries

Description

According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, Canada became the latest nation to ground Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, citing potential safety concerns following the deadly Ethiopian Airlines Boeing MAX crash on Sunday which claimed the lives of all 157 passengers onboard. At a news conference, Transport Minister Marc Garneau told a news conference that Ottawa would bar 737 MAX 8 and 9 jets from leaving, arriving, or flying over Canada. Garneau said that satellite data suggested similarities between the flight profiles of the Ethiopian jet and that of a Lion Air plane of the same type that crashed in Indonesia last year. Garneau said, “This is not conclusive, but it is something that points possibly in that direction and at this point we feel that that threshold has been crossed and that is why we are taking these measures."

Delta Air Lines reportedly cancelled 325 flights in the days leading up to Christmas. Christmas was the busiest travel season of the pandemic. Business Insider reports Thanksgiving similarly saw over 600 flight cancellations at the airline. The cancellations reveal a trend of poor performance for Delta during the holidays.
