Study: Raise The Minimum Wage And It's Likely To Stop 1,230 People From Committing Suicide

Description

A working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research has discovered a connection between so-called "deaths of despair" and the minimum wage and earned income tax credits. According to Business Insider, the study found that higher minimum wages and EITCs have had a positive impact on non-drug-related suicides among low-income Americans--especially with women. Not only do suicides generate tragedy and human suffering, they're also highly costly to the economy. One study estimates the average cost of a suicide suicide at $1.3 million, primarily due to lost productivity. The researchers predict that raising the minimum wage and EITCs could lead to 1,230 fewer suicides a year, which could save $1.6 billion annually.
