Spain Bars Exiled Ex-Catalan Leader From European Election


According to Reuters, Spain’s electoral commission barred former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont from running in the European Parliament elections in May. Puigdemont fled Spain in 2017 after Madrid imposed direct rule on the wealthy northeastern region which had unilaterally declared independence. Puigdemont and two other exiled candidates from his party said in a statement that the commission upheld an appeal against their candidacies.

    On Sunday, Reuters reported that sacked Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont and four associates had turned themselves in to Belgian police, after Spain issued an arrest warrant for rebellion and sedition. All are wanted by Madrid for actions related to the push for the region’s secession from Spain. Puigdemont traveled to Belgium shortly after Madrid took control over all administration in Catalonia. Under the European arrest warrant system, the five defendants in Belgium can agree to an extradition order immediately or the judge can set bail or detain them.
