Skoda Ireland has announced it will lend its support to the 2018 World Meeting of Families – a yearly gathering of the Roman Catholic Church. Part of this commitment includes providing the pontiff himself, Pope Francis, with transport. As such, when the Pope touches down at Dublin Airport he will be transported to Aras an Uachtarain, the Irish presidential residence in the back of a specially modified Skoda Rapid. Pope Francis is famed for his humble choice of vehicle, often choosing modest cars over the classic glass-sided ‘Popemobiles’ more associated with his position. He even drives himself around the Vatican in an ancient Renault 4.
Pope Francis received Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan at the Santa Marta residence in Vatican City on Monday. The two men swapped books after their conversation, which centred on ways of connecting people across the world. The discussion revolved around how to use communication technologies to alleviate poverty, encourage a culture of encounter, and deliver a message of hope to those most in need.
Pope Francis visited Tzitzernakaberd, the Geonocide Memorial in the Armenian capital Saturday. During the visit the Pontiff joined President Serzh Sarksyan and leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Church in a prayer service and met the descendants of Armenian orphans.
During a pre-Christmas address to the Curia, Pope Francis used strong words to announce his plans to reform the current way things are done at the Vatican. There was no applause afterwards.
Pope Francis greets tens of thousands of people gathered in St Peter's Square to watch him give the Easter mass and the traditional blessing. The Easter holy week, which commemorates the death and the resurrection of Christ, is the high point of the Catholic calendar. IMAGES
