  • Japan Probe May Have Completed Its Asteroid Touchdown

According to the country's space agency, Japan is in the process of landing two unmanned rovers on a distant asteroid. They are nearing completion of a task which it has previously described as the equivalent of hitting a 6-centimeter target at 20,000 kilometers away. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced that two vehicles collectively known as MINERVA-II-1, had successfully been deployed from the Hayabusa-2 spacecraft. At a press conference on Friday afternoon, JAXA scientists said initial data from the rovers suggested they had made a successful landing. They added they will only be able to confirm on Saturday morning when MINERVA is scheduled to begin data transmission again.
