Study Finds Renewable Energy Is Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels

Description

Researchers predict that within the next year, electricity generated by wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies will be cheaper than electricity generated by fossil fuel sources. A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows the costs of renewable energy fell to an all-time low in 2018 and will continue to fall well into the next decade. Mother Nature Network reports that the largest downward trend in costs will continue to be seen in solar- and wind-power technologies. More than 75% of onshore wind and 80% of PV projects due to be commissioned next year will generate power at lower prices than the most current and efficient models seen today from fossil fuels.

  • Perovskite Solar Panels Have Potential to Make Solar Energy 10x Cheaper

Scientists at Moscow's Skoltech may have found a way to dramatically reduce solar energy costs by making solar panels with a new inorganic super-efficient material called Perovskite. Perovskite is the name given to Calcium Titanate, a rare mineral found in the Earth's mantle and named after Russian mineralogist Lev Perovski. In 2009, researchers discovered that Perovskite can efficiently convert the energy of visible light into electricity, and experiments on using the material in solar panels began. Now, a new and improved Perovskite solar panel is just about ready to hit markets.

  • End to fossil fuels 'long overdue', says EU climate chief at COP28

EU climate chief Wopke Hoekstra laments that it has taken "30 years" of UN climate talks for humanity to "arrive at the beginning of the end of fossil fuels," calling a first-ever call for the world to transition away from the top culprit of climate change behind a planetary crisis "long overdue." Following all-night negotiations, the draft deal proposed by the Emirati presidency of the COP28 summit in Dubai would, if adopted, mark the first time that all fossil fuels are addressed in the 28-year history of international climate conferences.
