Before Massacre, Gunman Resigned Via Email

DeWayne Craddock resigned from his job with Virginia Beach's municipal government Friday morning—but not in a way that made anybody suspect he was going to massacre his colleagues hours later. A source telling the Washington Post that there was "nothing out of the ordinary" in the short email, in which the 40-year-old civil engineer "merely submitted his two weeks’ notice". Authorities say they are still trying to figure out a motive in the mass shooting at the municipal building. The shooting leaving 11 city employees and a contractor dead before Craddock was killed in a gun battle with police. City Manager Dave Hansen says it's not clear why Craddock resigned, still less why he wanted to kill his colleagues, Newser reports. He says a "very thorough review" of Craddock's personnel file uncovered nothing unusual.
