  • Will Trump Enforce The Tough New Rules On Reporting Police Killings?

According to Ben Casselman a writer for 538The Justice Department is taking steps to require law-enforcement agencies across the nation to report how many people their officers kill — but it will be up to the Trump administration to enforce the new rules. His colleague Carl Bialik explained yesterday, government data on police killings is a mess. Official estimates, which are based on voluntary reports from police departments, miss roughly half of all arrest-related deaths. That kind of painstaking process wouldn’t be necessary, however, if law-enforcement agencies were better about reporting deaths. The Penalties for Law Enforcement Agencies that don't report their deaths will be enforced at the discretion of the Attorney General, and past efforts to get data on police killings have struggled due to poor enforcement.

  • Ex Bombing Range Island Reopens To Public

San Miguel Island in California's Channel Islands is set to reopen this month. The reopening happens after two years of scrutiny for unexploded ordnance. Heavily bombarded by the U.S. military during World War II and continuing through the 1970s, the island is 55 miles off the California coast. It welcomes the public again starting on May 17. San Miguel was closed two years ago by the military because of safety concerns. Looking for explosives, the U.S. Navy surveyed the beaches, campgrounds, 18 miles of trails and other high-use areas at surface level and subsurface levels. No unexploded devices were found. 125 pounds of munitions parts, however, were removed from the island. Park spokeswoman Yvonne Menard said, "The National Park Service is thrilled the island is open for the summer season."
