With the Lexus NX, drivers are on the safe side: Thanks to advanced assistance and safety systems, the premium SUV achieves five out of five possible stars, the best rating in the crash test of the independent testing organization Euro NCAP.The new edition of the successful model, which is available as a full hybrid NX 350h and for the first time as a plug-in hybrid NX 450h+, impresses in all four test areas. In addition to the exceptional vehicle rigidity, which contributes significantly to the high level of passive safety, the third generation of the standard Lexus Safety System + is responsible.Euro NCAP rates these assistance systems with an outstanding 91 percent – a top result. But the new Lexus NX also achieves an excellent 83 percent when it comes to protecting adult occupants, and even 87 percent when protecting children. There are also 83 percent for vulnerable road users.
The Nissan Townstar is a corporate twin to Renault Kangoo and their structure is practically identical. Euro NCAP compared both vehicles to verify that the Renault Kangoo results can be applied to Townstar and performed additional tests where necessary.
Hyundai impresses with three new models in this publication, the all-electric IONIQ 5 and TUCSON, gaining 5-star ratings and Hyundai Bayon achieving 4 stars. Although the TUCSON only just clears the hurdle in Safety Assist to get into five-star territory, both IONIQ 5 and TUCSON display good all-round safety. The crossover SUV Bayon, fighting its way into an already overcrowded and highly competitive segment, lacks the centre airbag that is standard in IONIQ 5 and TUSCON. Nevertheless, the Bayon comes with robust crash protection and crash-avoidance features which help to secure it a creditable four-star rating.
The Toyota Yaris Cross follows hot on the heels of the Mirai and Yaris with another five-star rating. The car, available at petrol and HEV petrol, was tested partly in Australia and Europe, two important markets for the Yaris Cross. The result is published in collaboration with sister organisation ANCAP.
The CUPRA Leon not only offers contemporary performance, it is also one of the safest vehicles on the market: after the CUPRA Formentor, the brand's compact car has now also received a five-star rating and thus the top rating in the more stringent Euro NCAP test procedure.The CUPRA Leon achieved high scores in all areas for both the model variants with combustion engine and the plug-in hybrid variants: occupant protection for adults 91 percent, for children 88 percent; Protection of vulnerable road users 71 percent and 80 percent with the assistance systems. Regardless of the engine, every CUPRA Leon has very good prerequisites for making a contribution to more safety in road traffic.The excellent result in the test is no coincidence. In addition, seven airbags including a standard central front airbag, Front Assist with vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist detection, the emergency steering assistant as well as the intersection assistant, the lane departure warning system and the eCall emergency call system make the CUPRA Leon one of the safest vehicles currently available on the market .The CUPRA Leon follows the CUPRA Formentor, which also achieved the top grade. The security organization Euro NCAP revises its test procedures every two years and, thanks to the adjustments made in the past year, it is more stringent than ever before.
