Homotransphobia: Brazil's LGBT community finds refuge in Portugal

Every 16 hours on average a homophobic murder takes place in Brazil. Between 2011 and 2018, 4422 people from the LGBT plus community were killed. Since the election of Jair Bolsonaro, attacks on the community have multiplied, leading many gay or transgender Brazilians to flee their country. Because of the language and cultural links, many choose Portugal. It’s the only country in Europe where the constitution explicitly bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.Homosexual marriage was legalised in 2010. Our team went to Portugal to meet four LGBT Brazilians who feared for their lives in their home country. They’ve left everything behind to start a new life. Here’s what they had to say.
