Kobus van der Merwe, owner of the award-winning Wolfgat restaurant in Paternoster, South Africa, says that despite the global acclaim, they will keep things the way they are at Wolfgat. Merwe recalls the shock he felt when he found out that his small restaurant had been shortlisted in the World Restaurant Awards alongside other more well-established names in fine-dining.
When it comes to fine dining, the isolated South African fishing village of Paternoster probably wouldn't be the first place you'd think of. And yet, a tiny beach restaurant in this town in South Africa's Western Cape has been crowned the world's best. The seven-course tasting menu at The Wolfgat costs the equivalent of 53 euros ($60), a fraction of what you would pay at a top Paris table.
Italy's Osteria Francescana is crowned the world's best restaurant for the second time at an awards ceremony put on by a British trade magazine, beating out top eateries in Spain and France.
