Militia Groups Expected To Protect GOP Lawmakers Who Fled Climate Change Vote

Description

Republican senators went into hiding earlier this week to block the vote on climate change legislation. While Democrats already have a majority in the chamber, 20 members must be present for a quorum. According to Business Insider, following the walk-out, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown deployed state police to recoup lawmakers. Now, militia groups are allegedly threatening violence to protect the GOP senators, prompting the closure of the Oregon capitol's Saturday floor session. Local law enforcement says the safety of legislators, staff, and citizen visitors could be compromised if certain threatened behaviors were realized. Send bachelors and come heavily armed. According to HuffPost, that makes the US the only country to exit the nonbinding global pact to cut climate-changing carbon emissions. In Montana and Texas, climate-change-denying candidates cruised to victory. While many Senate and House races remain undecided, two sunny spots for climate advocates and environmentalists were in Arizona and in Colorado. Democrat Mark Kelly handily beat Arizona Republican Sen. Martha McSally. Kelly made tackling climate change a key part of his platform. And in Colorado, former governor and 2020 presidential contender John Hickenlooper ousted Republican Sen. Cory Gardner. Claiming to be a 'national leader' on climate, Gardner consistently peddles the conspiracy theory that environmentalists are plotting to control the economy.
