Mitsui Petrochemical Unit Under Investigation After Massive Fire Raged For Days

According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, officials said that state and local investigators have begun probing a petrochemical storage company outise Houston where a massive fire fed by giant tanks of fuel burned for days, billowing acrid smoke that could be seen for miles. Reuters reports that the state's environmental regulator said that it has begun an investigation into the incident. In the last 16 years, the agency has reportedly cited intercontinental Terminals for violations of state air-emissions rules 39 times.

    According to a report by Reuters, on Tuesday, Houston officials and environmental groups have raced to expand air monitoring after a raging fire at a Mitsui & Co petrochemical storage site produced billowing acrid smoke that could be seen and smelled from miles away. The massive fire at Mitsui unit Intercontinental Terminals Co in Deer Park, Texas, burned for a third day after firefighting water pumps broke down for six hours on Monday evening and flamed spread to two more tanks. The fire reportedly began on Sunday when a leaking tank containing naptha ignited and flames quickly spread. Reuters reports that state and federal monitors claimed air quality was safe, however environmental groups have disagreed and said that they would conduct their own monitoring.
