  • Production of the BMW 5 Series at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing - Paint Shop

The new BMW 5 Series, including the all-new fully-electric BMW i5, celebrated the official start of production today at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, in the presence of Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder. The site in Lower Bavaria, which is celebrating 50 years of BMW automotive production in 2023, has now ramped up its third fully-electric model in two years, following the BMW iX and BMW i7. Pure battery-electric vehicles’ share of total production at the BMW Group’s largest European manufacturing location is projected to increase to over 40 percent next year.To achieve this, the BMW Group is relying on flexible architectures and offering most of its models to customers around the world with different drive train variants. The BMW 5 Series – like the BMW 7 Series and BMW X1 before it – will be available with a fully-electric drive train or internal combustion engine, or as a plug-in hybrid. This requires a high degree of flexibility, but allows the company to utilise its plants’ capacity efficiently and adjust its offering to customer demand. Nedeljković: “We are following the market. Customer requirements determine what the actual drive train mix looks like.” This has been made possible by extensive investments in the production network. The BMW Group has invested more than one billion euros in integrating the BMW iX, BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series at the Dingolfing vehicle plant.

  • Production of the first-ever BMW i4 at BMW Group Plant Munich - Paint shop

The first series-produced BMW i4 has today rolled off the production lines at BMW Group Plant Munich. The company’s home plant now manufactures all drive variants on a single assembly line. “For the plant and team, the launch of the BMW i4 is a milestone on the road to electric mobility,” said Milan Nedeljković, BMW AG Board Member for Production. “By 2023 more than half of all vehicles from our Munich facility will have an electrified drive. The majority will be fully electric. So Munich goes fully electric.”Setting up production of the fully electric BMW i4 in the confines of the almost 100-year-old plant, the conversion and installation of systems proved particularly challenging. “We succeeded in integrating the new vehicle into our existing systems without halting production. The team and our partners did an amazing job,” added Peter Weber, Director of BMW Group Plant Munich. Space constraints notwithstanding, existing systems were removed, and new ones installed and ramped up. “Our bodyshop is a shining example of intelligent, efficient integration. Most of the new production processes for the BMW i4 can be carried out on the existing bodyshop systems,” Weber explained.

  • Production of BMW 5 Series - Paint Shop

Like all previous generations of this model since 1973, the new BMW 5 Series will be built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Bavaria, which serves as the centre of competence for all the larger BMW model series. The new BMW 5 Series is built using a very flexible production system in two assembly halls. On the one line it is built alongside the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo and the 4 Series and on the other alongside the BMW 6 and 7 Series. In preparation for the seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series, BMW’s internal production and processes in the supply chain were specially reorganised and further improved. On the western side of the plant, a new body shop was built. This facility offers innovative joining and bonding techniques specially adapted to the lightweight construction concept of the new BMW 5 Series. In preparation for the launch of the new model series, changes have also been made on the assembly side. Most prominently, major component pre-assembly operations have been restructured to enable the integration of the plug-in hybrid version.
