Russia Confirms Military Presence In Venezuela, Says Deployment Is Legal

Description

According to a report by CNN, on Thursday, Russia acknowledged that it has military personnel in Venezuela, which is currently facing political turmoil and a humanitarian crisis. In a briefing Thursday in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the deployment is legal and does not alter the delicate balance of power in the region. Zakharova reportedly said that "Russian specialists" were on Venezuelan soil but declared their deployment to be "in accordance with the provisions of the bilateral intergovernmental agreement on military-technical cooperation" between Moscow and Caracas. Reuters reports that Moscow has continued to support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, while Washington and over 50 other countries recognize Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.
