Trump To Send 1,500 troops To Middle East Amid Tensions With Iran

Reuters reports that President Donald Trump announced he will send about 1,500 American troops to the Middle East. The troops are being deployed as a protective measure, amid heightened tensions with Iran. U.S. officials said the troops will assist in missile defense and surveillance and the deployment will include a number of engineers. The decision to deploy more troops was made late Thursday night during a meeting between the president and top Pentagon leaders. Prior to the meeting, acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan told reporters, "Our job is deterrence. This is not about war."
