New Zealand's Ban On Assault Rifles Is Now In Effect

Business Insider reports New Zealand's new ban on many types of firearms went into effect on Friday after the government overwhelmingly passed legislation earlier this week to prohibit certain types of guns. The new legislation comes just 4 weeks after a gunman killed 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch on March 15. The new law forbids the circulation and use of military-style semi-automatic weapons, assault rifles, and their associated parts. The law's quick passage was prompted by outrage at the deaths of 50 innocent people at the hands of a gunman who used legal weapons to carry out the massacre.

  • GOP Leaders Brush Off Trump's Gun Proposals

On Tuesday, Republican leaders in Congress said they are not likely to arm teachers or raise the minimum age for buying semiautomatic rifles. The statement is a sign that two Donald Trump’s proposals may not get far on Capitol Hill. At a news conference, House Speaker Paul Ryan said, "We shouldn’t be banning guns from law-abiding citizens. We should be focusing on making sure that citizens who should not get guns in the first place don’t get those guns.” Democrats have said that Congress needs to expand the background check system to apply to all gun sales, not just those by licensed federal firearms dealers.
