Houthi rebels say to have withdrawn from key ports in Yemen

As Houthi rebels continue to withdraw from key ports in Yemen, forces from the Saudi-led coalition have reportedly killed at least 97 rebels and captured many others. The rebel pullback is part of the ceasefire agreements struck late last year in Sweden.

  • Houthi rebels cede control of Yemen’s primary port

    Yemen's Houthi forces have started to redeploy from the port of the Red Sea city of Hodeidah as part of a U.N.-sponsored peace agreement signed in Sweden earlier this month, a U.N. source and a spokesman for the group said on Saturday. The Iranian-aligned Houthis have agreed with the Saudi-backed government to implement a ceasefire in Hodeidah province and withdraw their respective forces. Retired Dutch general Patrick Cammaert, the head of a United Nations advance team charged with monitoring the ceasefire, arrived in Hodeidah this week.Under the deal, international monitors are to be deployed in Hodeidah and a Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) including both sides, chaired by Cammaert, will oversee implementation. The committee started its meetings this week.A U.N. source said the Houthi forces, which control the city and its strategic port, had started to redeploy overnight.FRANCE 24’s Bryan Quinn has the latest.

    According to Reuters, the United Nations brokered a cease fire between the Houthi rebels and Yemen's exiled government. The agreement between the warring parties is the first significant breakthrough by the UN to resolve Yemen's five-year civil war. According to the terms, the Houthis agreed to withdraw from three major port city, which have been used for shipping in humanitarian aid, including grain and oil. The Saudi ambassador to Yemen said that enforcement procedures will begin by the week's end.
