Adopting a Swedish program known as Vision Zero, the "Boulevard of Death" is getting a makeover. It is part of a New York City initiative that made 2015 the safest year on record for traffic accidents, even as the number of roadway deaths nationwide shows a steep increase. Engineers are redesigning a stretch of Queens Boulevard, which earned its notorious nickname due to the 185 people killed on the road over 25 years. A state judge has ruled against one New York county’s effort to stem a massive measles outbreak. In March, Rockland County banned unvaccinated children from public places. According to Splinter, Judge Rolf Thorson stopped the controversial month long ban after just ten days. It mandated fines and short-term jail sentences to parents who allowed unvaccinated children to attend schools, parks, malls, and other public spaces. Rockland County is in the midst of a major medical emergency, with 167 cases of measles confirmed as of Friday. Officials had hoped the extreme measure would spur parents to finally bite the bullet and vaccinate their kids.

According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, a US federal judge blocked New York state from enforcing a recently-enacted law that would force drug manufacturers and distributors to pay a 600 million dollar fine to defray the cost of fighting the widespread opioid epidemic. The ruling reportedly comes amid a trio of lawsuits challenging the law by generic drugmakers group the Association for Accessible Medicines, drug wholesale distributor group Healthcare Distribution Alliance and opioid generics maker Mallinckrodt Plc’s unit SpecGx. AAM said in a statement that while it supported proposals to address the opioid crisis, “legislative proposals must reflect an understanding of the pharmaceutical ecosystem and adhere to the tenets of the U.S. Constitution.”
