Is The Trump Administration Really Winning The War On Opioid Addiction?

Description

Despite President Donald Trump’s focus on the opioid crisis, his administration hasn't yet reversed the tide of the deadly epidemic. Nevertheless, Politico reports the White House can accurately point to signs of progress. Opioid prescriptions are down from their 2012 peak, data suggests overdose deaths are slowing, and the crisis is getting far more urgency and attention. But it's unclear what yardstick measures success. For instance, the decline in fatalities may not mean that fewer people are overdosing. It may mean that the campaign to make antidotes widely available is saving their lives. But even though addicts' lives may be saved, people aren't necessarily getting treatment to end their addiction.

The Pentagon has issued a notice to commanders known as a 'warning order.' According to CNN, officials say it's to begin planning to draw down the number of troops in Afghanistan to 2,500 troops and 2,500 in Iraq by Jan 15. US military commanders expect President Donald Trump to issue a formal order to begin further troop withdrawal before Trump leaves office on January 20th. The Pentagon appears ready to remove thousands more US troops from Afghanistan and Iraq. However, it also indicates Trump may fall short of fulfilling one of his core promises to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan before he leaves office. Multiple top military officials, including former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, said conditions were not yet right for complete troop withdrawal.

Cases and deaths from the novel coronavirus in the US are rising rapidly. The US broke its single-day coronavirus case record last week with over 88,000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day, in addition to over 1,000 deaths. Business Insider reports Buttigieg criticized Trump Jr. for being 'out of touch' when he said US coronavirus deaths are down to 'almost nothing.' Tell that to any of the Americans who are confronting what is literally the worst mass casualty event in this country since World War II. Pete Buttigieg

But on Sunday, America's most senior general publicly pushed back at O'Brien's remarks, calling them 'speculation.' Robert O'Brien, or anyone else, can speculate as they see fit, I am not going to engage in speculation, I'm going to engage in the rigorous analysis of the situation based on the conditions and the plans that I'm aware of in my conversations with the President. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley The mixed messages from the Pentagon and the White House come as the Taliban launched a major military offensive against the Afghan government.
