U.S. Supreme Court Rules That Maryland 'Peace Cross' Can Stand On Public Land

Description

According to a report by Reuters, on Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that a 40 foot-tall cross-shaped war memorial standing on public land in Maryland does not constitute government endorsement of religion, a decision which leaves unanswered questions regarding the boundaries of the US Constitution's separation of church and state. By a 7 to 2 vote, the justices overturned a lower court's ruling that had declared the Peace Cross in Bladensburg to be unconstitutional in a legal challenge mounted by the American Humanist Association. Reuters reports that the concrete cross was erected in 1925 as a memorial to troops who died in World War One.
