Description
The most festive holiday of the year in Greece takes place on March 25 which is Greek Independence Day, and nowhere is it more colorful and on the island of Mykonos, Greece. The celebration includes hours of traditional dance on the open-air plaza of Mykonos along the scenic waterfront and a colorful parade.
This is a patriotic commemoration and also a chance to get all dressed up and have a lot of fun. There are just 10,000 Greeks living on Mykonos, and it seems like most of them are out today participating in the festival. The proud parents are getting lots of photographs and everybody is ready to watch the schoolkids parade in their colorful traditional outfits, angling to get the best pictures, and I was there with the video camera to document the entire festival for you. Mykonos is one of the most popular of all the Greek island holiday destinations. In this video we are focusing altogether on this special day and the parade and the people with very little narration. We will let the pictures and the music tell the tale. Nearly all the people you see are local residents of Mykonos because the tourists have not yet arrived. It’s March 25, which is early in the season, giving the locals a chance to enjoy their own town at the beginning of spring. Some shops and certain hotels are still closed. Cruise lines don't show up until April generally, all of which combine with today's special events make this the perfect time to be in Mykonos. And with the magic of video you are there front and center so for most of the program I will step aside and stop talking and let you enjoy the performances with the beautiful people of Mykonos
This is one of the most important national holidays because it celebrates the Greek revolution, the War of Independence that began on March 25, 1821 in which the Greeks rose up against the Turkish Ottoman Empire which had occupied them for nearly 400 years.
The Revolutionary war against Turkey went on for eight years ending finally in 1829. It was most difficult, with major battles and victories on both sides killing many people. It was not only a political battle but a religious conflict between Christian Europe and the Muslim occupiers. By coincidence this is also one of the holiest days for the Greek Orthodox religion because on this day the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to the Christ child. It's the feast of the Annunciation and the bishop always participates to bestow his blessings.
