The United States warns Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the UN that they "must walk back from the brink of war" as tensions between the neighbors ratchet up. Bullet holes are visible on fences and signs at the Kasindi border post in eastern DR Congo's Beni territory on the border with Uganda, after two people were killed and several others injured when UN peacekeepers opened fire during an incident. UN chief Antonio Guterres says he is "outraged" about the incident after the UN force MONUSCO admitted that some of its peacekeepers had opened fire "for unexplained reasons", adding that arrests had already been made. A first delivery of mpox vaccines is expected to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the coming days, the World Health Organization's chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says during a UN press briefing in Geneva. The WHO declared an international emergency over mpox on August 14, concerned by the surge in cases of a new strain, the Clade 1b, in the DR Congo and its spread to nearby countries. SOUNDBITE
Around 50 people, including several Americans, go on trial in the Democratic Republic of Congo accused of involvement in what the army said was a thwarted coup attempt last month.
