A Texas grand jury has decided not to issue indictments relating to the death of Sandra Bland, an African-American woman who was found dead in her jail cell. Vanessa Johnston reports.
Preliminary autopsy results show the cause of Sandra Bland's death suicide by hanging, according Warren Diepraam, a Waller County, Texas, prosecutor during a press conference Thursday.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is "shocked by the reported death" of Russia's opposition figure Alexei Navalny. "The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to Mr. Navalny's family and calls for a full, credible, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Navalny's reported death in custody," Stephane Dujarric tells a press conference. The United States calls the death of six-year-old Gaza girl Hind Rajab, who days earlier had pleaded for help, "heartbreaking" and urges a prompt Israeli investigation. "It is just a devastating account, a heartbreaking account, for this child, and of course there have been thousands of other children who have died as a result of this conflict," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters, adding, "We have asked the Israeli authorities to investigate this incident on an urgent basis."
