    Six Minnesota men of Somali origin were charged on Monday with trying to join the Islamic State. The charges are the fruit of a lengthy investigation into a Midwest recruitment network cracked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.A passport specialist raised red flags on April 28, 2014 when 18-year-old Abdullahi Yusuf applied for an expedited passport for what he described as solo Istanbul to meet a friend he knew via Facebook. However, Yusuf could not provide convincing details as to his plans when pressed for information.According to court documents, the specialist “found his interaction with Yusuf so unusual that he contacted his supervisor who, in turn, alerted the FBI to Yusuf’s travel”.In November, three men in connection to Nur, 19-year-old Zacharia Yusuf Abdurahman, 21-year-old Mohamed Farah and 19-year-old Hanad Mustafe Musse, tried to fly to Syria from New York’s Kennedy International Airport, but were stopped by FBI agents.Agents arrested Abdurahman, Musse, 19-year-old Adnan Farah, and 20-year-old Guled Ali Omar in Minneapolis on Sunday. Daud and Mohamed Farah were arrested in San Diego in an attempt to obtain fake passports. Yusuf has since plead guilty to conspiring to support ISIS and is awaiting sentencing.
