U.S. and Cuban officials say they are close to a deal to resume scheduled flights between the two countries. Paul Chapman reports.
Santo Domingo, Aug 23 (EFE).- Tropical Storm Laura, which as of Sunday afternoon had left at least eight people dead on its passage across the Dominican Republic and Haiti, is strengthening as it heads toward Cuba, while Hurricane Marco is moving through the Gulf of Mexico toward the US Gulf Coast.Laura's path will take it over eastern Cuba with sustained winds of 85 kilometers (53 miles) per hour, a little stronger than they were on Sunday morning, and it will probably move across the entire Antilles island chain, according to the storm's projected path as calculated by the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.(Camera: MARIA MONTECELOS)FOOTAGE SHOWS RESCUE EFFORTS AFTER TROPICAL STORM LAURA´S PASSAGE ACROSS SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.

The first scheduled commercial American flight to Cuba in 55 years, flown by low-cost airline JetBlue, landed in Abel Santamaria Airport in Santa Clara on Wednesday after departing from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport earlier in the day. US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, along with other passengers of the inaugural flight were greeted with applause as they touched down for the historic occasion. The flight marks the beginning of what will soon be a maximum of 110 daily flights to Cuba from the US, operated by various carriers alongside JetBlue, including American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and Silver Airways. This development is part of a recent 'thaw' in Cuban-American relations that happened on the initiative of President Obama after over 5 decades of strained relations caused by the Cold War.
