Obama Orders Government to Give Workers Paid Sick Leave

Description

The White House says President Barack Obama will sign an executive order in Boston, requiring US government contractors to offer seven days of paid sick leave a year to their workers. Senior adviser Valerie Jarrett told reporters the United States was the only developed country without a paid leave policy, and that the executive order would benefit about 300,000 people working on government contracts. The order would go in effect in 2017, giving workers on government contracts a minimum of one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Contractors can offer more generous amounts if they want. This executive order follows other measures by the White House to expand access to paid leave, namely directing the government in January to give up to six weeks of paid sick leave for the birth or adoption of a child.
