A tanker carrying Russian liquefied natural gas, or LNG, finally landed in Boston on Sunday, despite US-imposed sanctions against the company operating the Russian facility. The French LNG tanker Gaselys landed after sitting outside Boston Harbour for several days. This shipment of Russian LNG to the US is unprecedented and is considered to be the first Russian LNG imported into the United States.
The howling of dogs, the bite of frosty winter, and the butterflies floating in your stomach moments before the race begins. Welcome to BaikalRace2017, the annual 96-mile-long endurance dog sled race which takes place on the frozen surface of the deepest freshwater lake in the world. Teams of racers and their dogs kicked off the first leg of the race on Saturday and rode long and hard throughout the weekend to vie for the crown. The annual Baikal dog-sledding endurance competition has drawn scores of adventurous tourists to frosty but beautiful Siberia. This year's sled race is set to run over several days, with the dogs sledding through Lake Baikal, the Baikal National Park and the Baikal Nature Biosphere Reserve. The annual BaikalRace is not the longest official dog sledding race in Russia, not by a longshot. That title goes to the Beringia race, an annual long distance dog sledding endurance race around the Kamchatka Peninsula running for about 590 miles in total, or about 6 times as long as Baikal Race. Longer still is the world famous Iditarod Race in Alaska, which runs for about 1,000 miles on a trail from Anchorage to Nome, making it the longest dog sled race in the world.
Who could have ever guessed that one can get so far in life just by playing in the sand? World renown sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik attempted a world record for the world's tallest sand castle along Puri beach in the Indian state of Odisha over the past two weeks and representatives of the Guinness Book of World Records flew down to check on the attempt. Pattnaik worked with 45 students from his Sudarsan Sand Art Institute as well as about 500 laborers in the sand over a period of 9 days to complete the structure. They focused the design around the theme of "World Peace" and carved global icons of peace, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Gautama Buddha, and Nelson Mandela, into their work of sand art. The team was aiming to beat the previous record held by American master sculptor Ted Siebert of 45 feet ten inches. In the end, the official height came in at a whopping 48 feet 8 inches, helping the team to secure a Guinness World Record on Friday. Pattnaik hopes that the new record as well as some of his other previous victories will draw attention and funding from the Indian government to help him accomplish his main dream - setting up a sand art park in his home state.
