U.S. Holiday Shopping Season Finishes Strong

On Tuesday, industry research groups said that a jump in consumer spending in the final stretch of December offset a slow start to the U.S. holiday shopping season and likely helped many retailers beat sales forecasts and predictions. The December boost is in contrast to a slow November, when early holiday promotions and expectations for consumers that deals would always be available did not meet standards. According to an analyst at retail consultancy AlixPartners this week, "The holiday shopping season started hot with Cyber Monday, the was followed by a lull for most of December and then a big-bang finish."
