In our latest "out-and-about" Talking Europe, we're taking you to a land of mountains, lakes, chocolate, banks and neutrality. It is, of course, Switzerland: the landlocked country in the heart of Europe with four official languages, which is home to the highest peaks in Europe and which boasts some of its most stunning scenery. It's also home to dozens of international organisations, including the Red Cross and the International Olympic Committee – but is famously not a member of the European Union.
Our guest is Oxford University historian and sociologist Theodore Zeldin. As Britain prepares for a December 12 snap election, he explains why he sees no easy way out of the Brexit chaos. "This is an election which will just increase the confusion, and we will be back where we started", he tells FRANCE 24.
Five days before the French vote, a friendly reminder from across the Channel: Theresa May springing the surprise of a snap general election in June to shore up support for the conservatives. What happens if she gets her wish? And what does it mean for France where two of the candidates both share Brexiteers' Eurosceptic views. Could there really one day soon be a Frexit?
Bastille Day is a chance to remind the planet that France has soldiers deployed in Mali, the Central African Republic, in the fight against Isis and on home soil, beefing up anti-terror patrols. It's a stretch but France relies on friends and allies. France's defense partnership with the UK is closer than ever but after Brexit and a Chilcot Report that highlights how the 2003 invasion of Iraq has made the UK gun shy. Could it be the beginning of the end of the Entente Cordiale?
