In sunglasses and jumpsuits, a crew of European test astronauts is laying the groundwork for a Mars simulation in the barren expanse of the Omani desert, a terrestrial mission intended to pave the way to the red planet.
China’s first Mars landing follows its launch last month of the main section of what will be a permanent space station and a mission that brought back rocks from the moon late last year.
For thousands of years, horses and donkeys have been some of our species' most important partners. A new study shows they're also friends to desert animals and plants, by digging deep wells that provide a vital source of water, especially at the height of summer. Footage from the Sonoran Desert in Arizona shows donkeys digging wells and other animals drinking from them.
LEAD: Boasting azure waters and white sands, a Turkish lake that NASA thinks hides secrets about Mars threatens to become too popular for its own good. Lake Salda gained international renown when US scientists began poking around in preparation for the Perseverance rover mission, which has been beaming back videos from the Red Planet since February. But activists fear that the interest could open the floodgates to tourists, and threaten the very ecosystem that made the lake special in the first place.
