Violence broke out in Nantes, western France, during a protest again "police brutality" days after the body of 24-year old Steve Caniço was found in the Loire. He had been missing since June 21st when police intervened to put an end to a street party. IMAGES
Trial resumes for Benoit Feuillu and four other alleged organisers of two banned demonstrations in western rural France. The activists argue they fight to preserve water and are opposing large artificials reservoirs or "bassines" which they see as a way to monopolise water resources for the farming industry. in October 2022 and specially, in March 2023, the protests turned into violent clashes with police with many protesters injured. A rally against anti-Semitism organised by French far-left party La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) is disrupted by demonstrators carrying signs reading "Touche pas à la mémoire" ("Don't touch our remembrance"), in criticism of party leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon's stance on recent events. The protest took place near the site of the former Vél d'Hiv in Paris, where Jews were infamously rounded up and detained during the second World War before being sent to camps. IMAGES
