Canary Islands airports reopened following sandstorm

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, Feb 24 (EFE), (Camera: Elvira Urquijo).- Gran Canaria airport on Monday was reopened after being closed on Sunday due to a sandstorm.Tenerife airport is also expected to start operating on Monday.According to the President of the Canary Islands Angel Victor Torres, 360 flights have been affected by the sandstorm recorded since Saturday in the islands.SOUNDBITES OF ANGEL VICTOR TORRES, PRESIDENT OF THE CANARY ISLANDS:"The sandstorm arrived yesterday but it didn’t do it at the same time in all the islands. For example, yesterday the situation wasn’t serious in Gomera and Hierro and today they have suffered problems due to the arrival of the sandstorm and the winds.”“Today the situation was normal in healthcare centres and hospitals, but it is possible that the sandstorm continues in the next days, so health authorities have activated the necessary measures to face it.”

    Fuerteventura, Oct 11 (EFE).- Spain's Guardamar Talía rescued Monday 121 immigrants of sub-Saharan origin traveling in two inflatable boats near the south of Fuerteventura island, with 20 women and two minors on board, a spokeswoman for Maritime Rescue told EFE.The first boat was located about 97 kilometers south of Morro Jable town, with 51 men, 10 women and two children on board, while the second one was located by a rescue plane a little further north, about 53 kilometers from the island, with 48 men and 10 adult women.
