  • Group of researchers seek to find the secrets of earth ancient's story

Cerro Guido, Chile, Apr 1 (EFE), (Camera: Felipe Trueba).- A valley at the southern tip of Chile, dubbed the “Rosetta Stone” of paleontology in the Southern hemisphere, is providing an international team of researchers with new findings of well-preserved fossils of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants from the Cretaceous period that could be the key to unlocking the secrets of life and the planet at the end of the dinosaur era.The research by the group of geologists, paleobotanists and biologists in Las Chinas valley, located on a sprawling estate normally used for cattle farming that houses a treasure trove of fossils at the end of the continent, is also shedding light on the common past shared by South America and Antarctica, as the director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) and director of this long-term paleontological expedition, Marcelo Leppe, tells epa-efe.FOOTAGE OF THE RESEARCH.SOUNDBITES OF MARCELO LEPPE, DIRECTOR OF THE PALEONTOLOGICAL EXPEDITION:“It's an iconic place with a lot of animal and plant species and microfossils that are helping us elucidate an unknown area of natural history."“We have some of America's oldest mammals in this valley and the oldest in Chile. But its value is not only due to its age, it’s that these are pieces that were missing which have revolutionized our thinking, and allowed us to rattle the cage of our understanding of the evolution of mammals in the cretaceous period."

  • Modern Medical Imaging Uncovers Secrets of World's Oldest Mummies

Researchers at the Chilean National Museum of Natural History tried to reveal the secrets of the Chinchorro mummies, the oldest in the world, with modern medical image analysis. According to the researchers, the Chinchorro People began mummifying human remains in their native Atacama Desert up to 2,000 years before the Ancient Egyptians. The Atacama Desert is one of the driest in the world, an ideal environment for preservation of mummies. The imaging analysis is based on a paleoradiology diagnostic method, which consists of the application of modern medical imaging techniques in the examination of human and animal remains as well as archaeological sites and tools. Who knows what secrets they will discover?

  • City Hall Workers Dress Up as Ninjas for Japan's National Ninja Day

Employees dressed as ninjas milled through City Hall in the Japanese city of Koka to celebrate a new holiday - National Ninja Day! Although National Ninja Day is actually on February 22, local bureaucrats in the tourism division have already started going to work clad in full ninja garb at Koka's city hall. These government employees will wear ninja attire for the whole week until February 24. Koka city was actually responsible for picking February 22 for National Ninja Day because the number two is pronounced “ni” in Japanse, and saying "ni" repeatedly resembles the beloved anime character Ninja Hattori Kun, whose catchphrase was "nin nin".
