Protests kick off in Hong Kong ahead of what is expected to be a huge pro-democracy rally on the anniversary of the city's handover to China. IMAGES
Hong Kong’s future remains uncertain as it prepares to celebrate 20 years since its handover.
Less than twelve hours after US human rights lawyer John Clancey was released on police bail over an allegation of plotting subversion against the Hong Kong government, he started working again at his office desk. Clancey, 79, was the first foreign national and US citizen arrested under the sweeping, draconian national security law Beijing imposed in Hong Kong as over 1,000 Hong Kong policemen netted 55 pro-democracy activists in dawn raids last Wednesday 6 January 2021.
Law professor and pro-democracy activist Benny Tai says he believes Hong Kongers will 'brace the wind and walk forward' despite Beijing's crackdown. He was released on bail following his arrest along with dozens of other activists under the national security law in the city.
China's crackdown in Hong Kong has escalated dramatically with police arresting more than 50 opposition figures in their largest operation since a draconian security law was imposed on the financial hub.
