The United States' 2020 general election is on track to shatter all previous records for voter turnout. According to Business Insider, nearly 140 million votes have already been counted, exceeding 2016's record-breaking 137.1 million votes. The 2020 total is only expected to soar in the coming hours and days. That's because votes, whether in-person or absentee, continue to be counted across the country. Wednesday, battleground states like North Carolina and Pennsylvania remained undecided. Large states such as California and Texas hadn't yet reported all results. However, by midday on Wednesday, Democrat Joe Biden led President Donald Trump by almost 3 million votes.
In PA, MN, and TX, federal judges have ordered election officials to "segregate" certain ballots. The vote-by-mail ballots that arrive late are being set aside in case another court invalidates them. Around 127,000 votes that were cast at drive-thru locations in TX during the early voting period. Those ballots have been specially marked for the same reason, says Business Insider. All of these court orders came after extensive litigation and it's not clear how many votes are at risk.
When it comes to his Cabinet, President Donald Trump has certainly lived up to his 'Celebrity Apprentice' catchphrase, 'You're fired.' Whether they left because they resigned or were fired, the list of former Trump officials who say they'll be voting for Democratic opponent Joe Biden is growing. According to Business Insider, some have joined anti-Trump political coalitions such as The Lincoln Project, Republican Voters Against Trump, and others. Hoping to sway the votes of independent, undecided, and moderate Republicans, they've spent millions on campaign ads to oust Trump from the White House. Former DHS chief of staff Miles Taylor called working under Trump 'terrifying," saying many things Trump wanted the department to do were illegal. Former White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, says he'll be voting for Biden. And former national security adviser John Bolton won't be voting for Trump or Biden. Instead, he'll write in the name of a conservative candidate.
According to CNN, as of Monday over 60 million people had already cast their vote for the 2020 presidential election. More people have voted early than ever before, exceeding the 2016 early voting turnout and total number of voters at the same point in 2016. A recent CNN/SSRS poll shows that 88% of registered voters said they were likely to vote, making a total of 154 million people voting. That's an increase from the nearly 140 million that voted in 2016. What early voting cannot predict is the results of the election. Trends are showing that Democrats are more likely to vote by mail and Republicans more apt to vote in-person. While Democrats took the lead in mail-in voting in Florida and North Carolina, in Florida, Republicans are making up a larger chunk of in-person early voters. This is a different trend that what's been seen in recent years.
