College campuses across the U.S. are seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases. More than half of colleges across the country reported "spikes" in positive coronavirus cases. According to UPI, the data suggests that students and others may be "super-spreaders". Since the start of the pandemic, many colleges and universities across the country closed their campuses. Researchers say the data "confirm the widespread fear in early fall that colleges could become the new hot spots".
Flu cases may spike in late winter after months of low infection rates. Experts are reluctant to predict a mild season too soon, according to ScienceMag. But many are ready to declare that COVID-19 control measures have prevented lots of flu illnesses. COVID measures dramatically tamped down the flu and other respiratory viruses that we usually face. The World Health Organization says flu activity in the Northern Hemisphere is at “interseasonal levels." That means it’s as low as in an ordinary summer.
One of the few bright spots of the coronavirus pandemic has been among children. Although severe illness and death have occurred, most children are spared the most serious outcomes. Studies have shown that nearly 1/3 of kids with the virus have no symptoms at all. The latter group has been of particular interest to researchers and policymakers, reports HuffPost. Scientists have long sought to quantify how many children are asymptomatic, or “silent carriers”. New research out of Canada provides one of the clearest estimates to date.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is advising children be included in the vaccine process. They are urging for the immediate inclusion of children in ongoing COVID-19 vaccine research. Preliminary data was released from drug manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer Inc. this month. The data has been extremely impressive, suggesting both vaccines may be more than 90% effective. Members of the AAP say it is essential that the FDA stick to “transparent requirements”. This is for measuring the risks and benefits of vaccines for the population, including children.
