Mitch McConnell Taking Over COVID Stimulus Talks

Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is reportedly taking the lead on stimulus talks. The White House is sitting the stimulus talks out. Pres. Elect Joe Biden may also leap into the congressional discussions as his transition team kicks into high gear. Democrats and Republicans are still very far apart on spending levels of another stimulus. They are also negotiating the contents of another economic rescue plan.

CNN reports the incidents took place after the Senate stalled Friday on increasing stimulus checks to $2,000 for millions of Americans. After McConnell's Louisville home was marked with graffiti early Saturday morning, the Kentucky Republican denounced the incident as a "radical tantrum."     The Washing Post is reporting that on Monday top Democrats approached the GOP's Mitch Connell with a secretive COVID-19 stimulus bill proposal. According to Business Insider the move came just before lawmakers unveiled a bipartisan $908 billion proposal. The new stimulus moderately increases proposed GOP spending. Speaker Pelosi said that the "private" proposal was also sent to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. On Tuesday, McConnell appeared to settle on a version close to the GOP's original demands for a small stimulus bill.

    On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell discussed the impending COVID stimulus package. McConnell said there is "no reason" Congress can't quickly agree a new round of coronavirus stimulus. Business Insider reports that Democrats and Republicans have been at an impasse for months. Republicans wants a smaller deal while Democrats looking for more. Congress is meeting for a short session due to end by Christmas, and also has to avert a government shutdown. Among the issues to be thrashed out are whether to send another round of $1,200 direct payments to Americans.
