Georgia's Republican Rep. Doug Collins served in the House for seven years and has raised his political profile as the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee. However, Business Insider reports his reelection campaign is under fire for showing numerous ads featuring Collins wearing his US Air Force uniform. Collins serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves. He previously deployed to Iraq as a chaplain. Several of Collins' images appeared to violate the Defense Department's regulations intended to protect the military's apolitical status. Ads must indicate their retired or reserve status and include a disclaimer stating that the Defense Department does not necessarily endorse them. Attorney Michael Weinstein is the founder of the non-profit group Military Religious Freedom Foundation. He described the ads as a 'shameful' violation. He's like the sole star of these ads. Freshman GOP Rep. Peter Meijer voted to impeach Pres. Donald Trump last week. On Sunday, he talked about the fallout of that decision. Meijer said he might have ended his political future by voting to impeach President Trump. During an appearance on ABC's "This Week," he asked Meijer if voting for Trump potentially damaged his career beyond repair. "I may very well have," Meijer said. Meijer said voting to impeach Trump was necessary for the good of the country.
On Sunday, Freshman GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina is slamming President Donald Trump. Mace said Trump's actions related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riots "put all of our lives at risk." "We feared for our lives, many of us that day, and our staff," she said. "My children were supposed to be up there." Mace said that Congress needs to find a way to hold the President accountable.
Former Rep. Mickey Edwards of Oklahoma said leaving the Republican Party because of Trump's control over the party. Edwards said the GOP has become a "cult" under President Donald Trump. He decried Republicans who backed Trump's effort to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's election win. "This has become a cult," he said.
GOP Rep. Liz Cheney announced on Tuesday that she will vote to impeach President Donald Trump. Cheney agrees with others in government positions that the President incited a deadly insurrection last week. Cheney called Trump's incitement of the mob the greatest "betrayal" of the constitution by any American president. "The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack," she said in a statement. Cheney went on to say; "Everything that followed was his doing." 4 people have died as a result of the mayhem at the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
