New York, June 15, EFE, (Camera: Alba Vigaray).- The young Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, considered one of the most progressive politicians in the U.S. Congress, calls for the mobilization of the Latino vote in the November elections to avoid the danger of the re-election of Donald Trump as president, and what he would represent for this community. FOOTAGE OF EFE INTERVIEW WITH DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZTRANSLATIONS: Q: Will the Latino vote be important in this November election in order to unseat Trump as president?A: It's going to be very important because it's going to be an election of participation. The work we need to do now is not only to convince Trump's supporters, but also to convince our community to go out and vote in November. It's going to be a context of seeing who has the most enthusiastic supporters and which supporters go out and vote, and that's why the Latino role in our community is so important, here and in other states like Colorado, Arizona or Florida, that have Latino populations that are going to be very important for us to win the White House in November.Q: What message would you give to get them to go out and vote massively this time?A: This is an election that is going to determine the lives of our community. This president is really dangerous for our community, especially when he is trying to take away the right to vote from the black community, the Latino community, Afro-Latinos. It's very important that we use our rights in this election.Q: The anti-racism demonstrations are also changing the political landscape. How do you think Trump is handling this crisis?A: We are in a phase where it seems that this president and the Republican Party in the U.S. want to ignore the coronavirus and forget that we have a pandemic, and are accepting that thousands and thousands of people may die. In this context, after the death of George Floyd, all the people who took to the streets made a very serious decision for our community, had to choose between staying home and going out and putting themselves at risk for the virus to defend our rights and defend the life of Floyd and the Black community in the United States.Q: In the demonstrations we have seen, among many other reactions, attacks on symbols and statues of people who are considered racist or slaveowners and one of those symbols is Christopher Columbus, what do you think of these attacks?A: This debate about the symbols, if they are symbols of the Confederate leaders... is a debate about our history and what history of our history is being told. Why do we have these symbols and these statues of people who had slaves and not the heroes who wanted to free the slaves? This debate is similar with Christopher Columbus. Why do we have a statue of him and not of indigenous people who are also the reason we are a Latino community in the first place? We don't have statues of our indigenous leaders, the indigenous history forms the roots of the Latino community and that's a conversation of our history that we have to have.Q: Would you be in favor of removing the Columbus Circle statue of Columbus from New York City's Columbus Circle Square?A: In the debate about the statues there is also a debate about their contexts. If the statue is presented as a hero, I think it's something that should be changed, but if it's a statue in a museum... or we can see what the plaques on those statues say, what stories they tell. I think these are also issues that should be discussed in order to decide which statues to change or not.Q: Following Bernie Sanders' withdrawal from the Democratic presidential race, Joe Biden - the candidate of this party who will be running against Trump in the November election - has called for the party's ranks to be united between the more progressive wing, represented by you among others, and the more traditional wing. You have shown yourself to be in favour of this union, but with conditions.A: We are still in dialogue, I have accepted the position of co-director of the Democratic Party's Environment team and we are now in a debate about how we can change the policies of the Democratic Party in a more progressive direction for our future.Q: Have you achieved anything concrete?A: We are still in dialogue, we still have one or two more meetings. Right now we do have progress, but it's not finished.Q: Another discussion with Biden is the next vice president. Do you make it a condition of your support for this candidacy or do you support it more strongly that it be a woman?A: Of course I support having a female candidate and a female Vice President, but it's also very important what policies that woman supports, whether she supports progressive policies for our immigrant community, for the environment, for our system, for economic rights. Those policies are very important to me and they are the ones I am pushing for the election of a vice president. But in November, the options are very clear and I am going to vote for President Biden. Q: What will happen if Trump is re-elected?A: I don't want to consider that possibility because it would be very serious and very dangerous if President Trump were re-elected. We already know what this Administration did, that they separated children from their parents and their families at the border, the rights that they took away from our community, the rights that they took away from women in our community. I believe that when Trump was elected in 2016 many people did not know or could not imagine what this Administration was going to do. That's why, when I think about the possibility of his re-election I can't even imagine, because he has no limits, he doesn't respect the law, he doesn't respect our Courts and that's very, very dangerous for the possibilities of our community.Q: One of the issues that had been talked about is the election in regards to mail voting. Do you see Trump in a very compromised situation rejecting defeat?A: He doesn't want to accept the possibility or the options of voting by mail because the Republican Party's project now is to take away the right to vote from our communities, especially the Black community and the Latino community here in the United States. The expansion of the right to vote or access to the vote is something that the Republicans don't want because they know that they have a very small and not at all diverse electoral base and so the Republican project is to put a lot of obstacles in the way of the ability of communities to vote, of those who are not white, rich or male, and so he is going to resist expanding access to the vote, but with his position, it doesn't change the ability of states to pass laws in this regard.

Trump has resisted acknowledging President-elect Joe Biden's win and continues to challenge the election results. His campaign has not won any of the almost two dozen lawsuits filed across several states based on unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. Biden has called on Congress to act swiftly and approve a new stimulus package to combat the coronavirus pandemic and help millions of financially-struggling Americans before the year ends.
On Wednesday morning Pres.Donald Trump tweeted his anger at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. What did McConnell do to anger Trump? He congradulated President-elect Joe Biden after the Electoral College confirmed his election victory. "Too soon to give up." "Republican party must finally learn to fight. People are angry!" Business Insider reports that Trump's claims that he won the election have no basis in fact. He has repeatedly failed in his attempts to challenge the results in court.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a request to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's victory in Pennsylvania. According to Business Insider, the request was put forth by a group of Republican state legislators, led by US Rep. Mike Kelly. They asked the court for an emergency order nullifying Biden's win, claiming the state legislature did not have the power to expand mail-in voting. It's yet another defeat among dozens of the Trump campaign's ongoing attempts to keep Trump in office for a second term. Battleground states Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, and Wisconsin have all certified their results as of last week. Tuesday is also the "safe harbor" deadline by which all 50 states have to certify their results and resolve any legal disputes surrounding the results.
President Donald Trump called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Saturday morning. According to Business Insider, Trump asked Gov. Kemp to convince the state legislature to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's November election win. During the call, Trump also requested that the governor mandate an audit of absentee ballot signatures. Trump's call came on the same day that he will arrive in Georgia to stump for Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. Earlier this week, Trump said that he was 'ashamed' to have endorsed Kemp in his successful 2018 gubernatorial campaign. Kemp has already stated that he will not ask state legislators to come back to Atlanta for a special session.
President Donald Trump has vowed to fight the outcome of the election that left opponent Joe Biden as president-elect. He's deployed a team of lawyers to fight election results in several states, insisting widespread voter fraud was at play and that the election was 'stolen' from him. Now, Business Insider reports the head of Trump's legal team has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. David Bossie tested positive on Sunday. Bossie is not a lawyer but is a frequent contributor to Fox News. Several others in Trump's inner circle have also recently caught COVID-19, including HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
A record-shattering 100 million Americans cast their ballots in the 2020 general election before polls opened Tuesday. CNN reports the millions of mail-in ballots are expected to lead to a delay in the counting of votes once the polls close. Nevertheless, President Donald Trump has continued to falsely claim that the count is supposed to be completed by Election Night. His stance is politically beneficial because more GOP voters are expected to show up on Election Day, while more Democrats are expected to vote through the mail. Even before polls opened on Election Day, both presidential camps were gearing up for legal confrontations. The changes to voting rules due to the pandemic sparked a litany of court cases over rules related to voting and the counting of ballots.
