Ballot counting is underway in Detroit, in the battleground state of Michigan, as a bitterly divided America heads to the polls, amid the worst pandemic in a century and an economic crisis, to decide whether to give President Donald Trump four more years or send Democrat Joe Biden to the White House. When the polls close on Election Day and no more voting is allowed, the election judge at each polling place has poll workers seal all the ballot boxes. The boxes are sent to a central vote-counting facility. This is usually a government office, such as a city hall or county courthouse. There, if paper ballots are still used, election officials manually read each ballot and add up the number of votes in each race. Where punch-card ballots are used, election officials count the ballots by hand, then run them through a mechanical punch card reader, which prints out a tally. For absentee/mail-in ballots, they're first cross-checked against voter registration records, to ensure there's no fraud taking place. On Election Day—but never before—state election officials count the mail-in ballots, and add the tally to the ballots cast in-person. With newer, fully computerized voting systems, the vote totals are transmitted automatically, or via removable digital media, to the central counting facility.
A Florida man apparently tried to follow President Donald Trump's instructions to voters to 'test' the electoral system. Now, he's going to need a lawyer. Newser reports 62-year-old Larry Wiggins was arrested Thursday in Manatee County and faces a 3rd-degree felony charge. He was charged with requesting a mail-in ballot on behalf of another elector. In this case, it was for his now-deceased wife. Wiggins says he was just testing the system, didn't plan to use the ballot, and didn't try to replicate his late wife's signature on her application. I heard so much about ballots being sent in and people just having found them in different places. I said well, let me just send it in and see what's going to happen. Larry Wiggins
