  • Protest against Japan's Fukushima wastewater dump continues in Seoul

    Seoul, Apr 19 (EFE/EPA).- Dozens of South Korean activists gathered in Seoul again on Monday to protest against the release of radioactive water into the ocean from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Last week, Japan formalized its to decision to release over 1 million tonnes of contaminated water stored in the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, after treating it to remove most radioactive elements. The contentious measure is aimed at solving the accumulation of radioactive water at the Daiichi nuclear facilities, one of the most pressing problems in the complex process of dismantling the plant that was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.   • Rescue operation continues following Himalayan disaster in India

    Uttarakhand, Feb 9 (EFE/EPA).- The recent Himalayan disaster in north India that killed 29 may have been caused by a landslide and not a glacial rupture as believed earlier, a geologist said on Tuesday after analyzing satellite imagery.The images captured before and after the disaster indicate that the massive flooding in the northern state of Uttarakhand was triggered by a pile of freshly-accumulated snow that collapsed into a ridge area, bringing columns of mud and rocks downstream.Santosh Kumar Rai, who heads the glacial studies at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in the state capital Dehradun, told EFE that it might not have been because of part of a glacial lake outburst as was widely reported earlier.
