  • Hong Kong debate on Chinese anthem suspended after object thrown

Hong Kong, May 28 (EFE/EPA) .- The debate on a bill that would make it illegal to insult or abuse the Chinese national anthem was suspended on Thursday in Hong Kong after an opposition lawmaker hurled something into the chamber setting off a strong odour. The Legislative Council (the Hong Kong parliament) on Wednesday was scheduled to debate on a draft law seeking to penalize "disrespect" to the March of the Volunteers, or the Chinese national anthem. If approved, anyone who found to misuse or show disrespect to the anthem would face sentences of up to three years in prison and fines of up to HK$50,000. Hong Kong has been gripped for several years by political unrest and demonstrations, which had been gaining momentum in the months leading up to the coronavirus outbreak, which led to them being suspended. The territory was returned to Chinese control in 1997 after a century and a half of British rule, after London and Beijing signed a joint declaration in 1984 under which the UK renounced its last Asian colony. This deal established a series of freedoms in the city for 50 years, many of which do not exist on mainland China. • Thousands leave Hong Kong for UK due to China's national security law

Hong Kong, Aug 9 (EFE/EPA).- Thousands of Hong Kong residents are taking up the United Kingdom’s offer of safe haven and a path to British citizenship rolled out in response to Beijing's crackdown on the former British colony and the introduction of a national security law that curtails freedom of speech. The British government expects roughly 300,000 to take up the offer over the next five years. The National Security Law that Beijing imposed on the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong this time last year silenced the protests that erupted in 2019 but also led to mass arrests, the marginalization of the political opposition and prompted many citizens to consider emigrating.
