  • Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco: If the foundations of our society are not shaken, it will be impossible to improve

Venice (Italy), Sep 11 (EFE), (Camera: Álvaro Padilla).- "If the foundations of our society are not shaken, it will be impossible to improve," Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco said in an interview with EFE after his latest work, New Order, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival.FOOTAGE AND SOUNDBITES OF MEXICAN FILMMAKER MICHEL FRANCO (FROM 00:50- END): " The film is related to the enormous ga that exists between millions and millions of poor people, in the case of my country 60, and a privileged class, very reduced, that accumulate wealth.""In Europe, there is a brutal (outbreak) of xenophobia against migrants and it wants to keep the countries pure. Extreme far-right governments re returning like if we had completely forgotten what people had to live here in the 30s and 40s. They are unsatisfied people. Of course, it caught my attention that the yellow vests were similar to what I was writing about. It also happened with Chile and with Hong Kong for its own reasons. And then, just a few years before Venice, with Black Lives Matter. I saw that on television while I was finishing the film. It's not only a prophetic film but it focuses on urgent issues.""What worries me is that governments take advantage of people's angry and fear. They are militarizing and more and more controlling every thing we do more.""The question is: 'Are we looking for a better and equal world?' It seems we are not. The pandec has shown exactly the contrary. There's no empathy towards those who don't have their basic neccesites covered.""It's scary because there isn't a positive scenario, there is not an simple way so people could understand. If the foundations of our society are not shaken, it will be impossible to improve. There are not simple changes, something deeper has to come."

  • Alex de la Iglesia's 30 Coins premieres in Venice

Venice (Italy), Sep 11 (EFE), (Camera: Álvaro Padilla).- The Spanish filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia premiered on Friday at the Venice Festival with the first chapter of his series 30 Coins.FOOTAGE AND SOUNDBITES OF SPANISH FILMMAKER ÁLEX DE LA IGLESIA:"The funniest and the most passionate thing about making films in this country is something that maybe I have always done: telling the stories from a very close perspective. So if all these things happen in New York, where terrible things normally happen, or at a building with gargoyles in New York, we had already seen it. What it's exciting is that all this occurs in a small village in Segovia.""Now in Spain we don't talk about religion and we are not especially religious. However, in a second level, religion is in our minds, as well as all the pain your parents and grandparents suffered."
