Cancun, Oct 8 (EFE).- The Yucatan Peninsula in southeastern Mexico was hit by Hurricane Delta on Wednesday, causing widespread damage and flooding, and the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.There were hours of tension in the region prior to the arrival of Delta, which entered as a category 2 hurricane in the north of the island of Cozumel, Mexican Caribbean, at 5.45 am local time (10:45 GMT), with winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Four bakers working the overnight shift were trapped inside the El Bolillo bakery for two days due to severe floods brought on by Hurricane Harvey when it struck the southeastern coast of Texas. During that time, the bakers worked non-stop to produce thousands of baked goods for the storm's victims, using four thousand pounds of flour to bake from Saturday all they way until Monday afternoon. The police picked up the loaves and delivered them to Hurricane Harvey victims.
Volunteers helped residents of Houston's flooded Kingwood neighbourhood and their pets to safety as waters continue to rise. Due to the lack of police and fire department boats, some civilians used their personal boats to rescue fellow residents to help them leave the Kingwood neighbourhood, which is reportedly one of the most affected neighbourhoods in the area.
Volunteer rescuers roamed flooded streets of Houston on Sunday, searching for trapped and stranded people after large-scale floods in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey. Rescuers used several different types of boats, including traditional rowboats and airboats powered by huge fans. At least one person was reportedly killed in the Houston flooding after torrential rain from Tropical Storm Harvey broke records and caused flooding not seen in decades.
