Los Angeles County, California, will no longer be subjected to air quality regulations limiting the number of cremations that may be performed there. Business Insider reports the South Coast Air Quality Management District said the regulation was lifted so officials could handle a 'backlog' of bodies. Business Insider reports the move comes as a grim reminder of the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic in California. The regulation has been lifted for 10 days, with the option to be extended. As of January 15, there were more than 2,700 bodies being stored at hospitals in LA County and at the Coroner's office. The current rate of death is more than double that of pre-pandemic years, leading to hospitals, funeral homes, and crematoriums exceeding capacity. South Coast Air Quality Management District
New COVID-19 infections have soared in Los Angeles County, with about one in five residents who get tested receiving positive results. In just over a month, the county doubled its number of infections, climbing from about 400,000 cases on November 30 to more than 800,000 cases on January 2. According to CNN, the deluge of cases has translated to a surge of COVID-19 patients, overwhelming hospitals. Los Angeles County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer says every 15 minutes, one person dies from COVID-19. The situation has become so dire that LA County ambulance crews have been told not to take patients with little chance of survival to hospitals.
On Sunday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced three weeks of new, statewide, social distancing orders. The move comes in response to a 113% surge in cases over the past two weeks across Michigan—bringing the total cases to around 276,000. But Gizmodo reports White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Scott Atlas is urging Michiganders to protest in solidarity with the novel coronavirus. The neuroradiologist has zero experience in public health, infectious diseases, or epidemiology. He's has reportedly earned enmity from other members of the White House task force for pushing unfounded, dangerous theories like 'herd immunity.' He has also lied about the science behind mask-wearing to create the false impression masks are useless against the virus.
