On the last day of Russia's presidential elections, set to cement Vladimir Putin's grip on power, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny widow, Yulia Navalnaya, tells the press after voting at the Russian embassy in Berlin that Putin is "a killer" and a "gangster. Crowds had earlier chanted: "Yulia, Yulia, we're with you," as she entered to cast her ballot. Alexei Navalny was Putin's most prominent rival, and died in an Arctic prison last month in mysterious circumstances. SOUNDBITE
People respond to a call from opposition figure Yulia Navalnaya to turn up at polling stations at midday Moscow time (0900 GMT) in a form of protest that attempts to overwhelm them. Before his death in an Arctic prison last month, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who galvanised mass anti-Putin rallies, had urged Russians to protest on March 17. The ceremony comes two weeks after Navalny died in an Arctic prison. Hundreds of people gather in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin, a few hours after the announcement of the death of the Kremlin's most prominent critic Alexei Navalny in an Arctic prison, according to Russian officials. "Today, the Russian government has probably murdered Alexei Navalny," says a speaker. Navalny lost consciousness on Friday and could not be revived by medics, the Russian prison service says. IMAGES
